Rug pad guide – UK flooring compatibility

A £20 pad extends a rug's life by 40% and stops it becoming a slip hazard. It also, if you pick the wrong material, permanently ruins vinyl, laminate and marble. Here is which pad belongs on which UK floor.

Pad materials, ranked
- Natural rubber + felt (recycled). The universal answer for hardwood, engineered wood, tile. Around £25–£45 for a 200 × 290 pad on Amazon.co.uk. Look for "phthalate-free" and "no adhesive backing".
- Open-weave felt (UFH-rated). Only pad that works over underfloor heating without cutting output. £30–£55 for 200 × 290.
- Non-slip mesh (thin PVC-free grid). Cheap, thin, no cushioning. Fine for kitchens and hallways where the pad only needs to anchor. £8–£20.
- Rug-on-carpet gripper. Loop-and-hook pad specifically for laying a rug over fitted carpet. £12–£25. Only pad type where solid grip beats felt.
- Ruggable Cling pad. Only for Cling-backed covers. £30–£75 depending on size. Never wash.
Materials that ruin floors
- Solid rubber – traps moisture against hardwood and vinyl. Vinyl reacts with plasticiser and yellows permanently within 12 months.
- PVC / latex backing – reacts with laminate coatings and sealed stone. Marks are permanent, refinishing costs £200+/m².
- Adhesive-backed foam – pulls up the top veneer of engineered wood on removal. Do not use.
- Any solid pad over UFH – reduces heat output 30% or more, and on electric UFH triggers the safety cut-out.
Sizing
The pad should be 5 cm shorter than the rug on each side. For a 200 × 290 rug, a 190 × 280 pad. Rug pads are sold in fixed sizes but can be cut with kitchen scissors – cut on a clean floor and vacuum both sides before use. Non-slip mesh cuts cleanest; felt-and-rubber pads need a sharp craft knife.

Do I really need a pad?
Yes for two reasons. (1) Safety – an unpadded rug on hard floor is a slip hazard, and the top cause of rug-related domestic injuries in the UK is a hallway runner without a pad. (2) Lifespan – a pad extends a rug's realistic life by 40% (British Rug Council estimate). A £20 pad on a £150 rug is £6 per year of extra life.
How big should the pad be?
5 cm shorter than the rug on each side. So a 200 × 290 rug takes a 190 × 280 pad. The pad should not be visible under the rug edge.
Can I wash a rug pad?
No. Wash a pad and the non-slip layer dies in one cycle. Wipe with a damp cloth and drop of Fairy Liquid. Lifespan of a decent pad, never washed: 7–10 years.
What about the Ruggable Cling pad?
It works with Ruggable and Tom Tailor covers only – the Cling backing on the pad mates with the Cling backing on the cover. Do NOT use a Cling pad under a traditional rug (no grip on a non-Cling surface).
