How it's made
A traditional Persian rug is built knot by knot on a vertical loom, cotton warp threads under tension, wool weft passed through, then rows of asymmetric (Senneh) or symmetric (Ghiordes) knots tied by hand. Densities range from 60 KPSI (knots per square inch) for city rugs from Tabriz to 400 KPSI for master Isfahan and Qom silk work. A 200 × 290 hand-knotted rug at 150 KPSI represents around 2 400 hours of loom time – which is why the £1 500 you pay for it is roughly a UK weaver's wage of 60p per hour.
How to spot a fake or misrepresented listing
Real hand-knotted Persian: irregular knot spacing visible on the back, colour variation (abrash) within a single field, fringe that is a continuation of the warp threads (never sewn on), pile visibly denser at the middle than the edges. Machine-made reproduction: uniform knot spacing, dead-flat colour, fringe glued or sewn on separately, backing bonded with latex. Turn the rug over – if the pattern is not visible on the back (even faintly), it is machine-made. This one test rules out 95% of misrepresented listings on Amazon.co.uk.
